The Boys & Girls Clubs of Grand Rapids and Greenway is an out-of-school time program for all school-age youth K-12th grade. Services for youth age 6-18 include access to basic, immediate needs (food, clothing) and connection to on-site programs that affect kids in three priority outcomes: Academic Success, Good Character and Citizenship, and Healthy Lifestyles.
“At the Community Foundation we recognize the need for good, quality after school programming and things for kids to do in the summer,” says Sarah Copeland, Director of Grants and Programs at the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation.
According to Lori Kangas-Olson, Director of the Boys and Girls Club of Grand Rapids and Greenway, “Our Mission is ‘to empower and inspire all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as caring, productive, responsible citizens.’ Our programs are there to serve youth when they need help most, every day after school, and weekdays during the summer.” Although the organization is autonomous, they collaborate with the national organization on best practices in youth development, evidenced-based programming, outcomes and evaluation, and more.
Leadership and Mentoring - creating a pathway to successful futures
Kangas-Olson continues, “At the Clubs, we believe Leadership and Mentoring work symbiotically in the developmental growth of youth. The Leadership and Mentoring program is focused on 160 students in grades 5- 12 at the Grand Rapids and Greenway Club sites.” The opportunities span from one-on-one mentoring during Club hours to local leaders mentoring individuals and small groups on leadership qualities, opportunities, and teamwork.
The Kosak Family Fund ($1,097) and the TJ Maroney/Barzen Donor Advised Fund ($250) provided $1,347 in grants to support the Boys and Girls Club of Grand Rapids and Greenway,
