Field of Interest Funds

The Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation has a number of Field of Interest Funds, each designed to support an area of importance or concern to the Greater Itasca Area. Every community in the Greater Itasca Area is unique, with different flavors and history, but there are many interests about which we all share and care.

Endowed Field of Interest Funds Last Forever

Most of our Field of Interest Funds are endowed, meaning that they will last forever, because we only grant out a portion of the earnings each year. Nonprofit organizations and charitable groups will be able to request grants to support their community programs, every year, for as long as the community program is in existence.

The majority of the grants are provided during our Annual Grant Cycle. We spoke about our Annual Grant Cycle in the paper last week, which is open for applications each year, from July 15 – September 15.

Grants from Field of Interest Funds

Field of Interest Funds do not have a dedicated donor who supports the fund. Field of Interest Funds are by the community, and for the community. This means that the fund relies on gifts and contributions from all community members in order to grow. Why should the community care if a Field of Interest fund grows? You should care because the money that is put back into the community (grants) directly benefits you and the entire community.

“One of the great things about giving to a Field of Interest Fund is that you choose what you are interested in, and you don’t pay any fees. One hundred percent of your gift goes to the fund,” notes Chris Fulton, Executive Director at the Community Foundation. “You can be assured that your gift will only be used to support your passion, and because we only spend a portion of the interest, your gift lasts forever,” continues Fulton.

Since Field of Interest Funds don’t have a dedicated donor, and last forever (endowed), the Community Foundation has a committee of Board and community members that evaluate and approve the grant requests each year. This allows the Funds to always be nimble and support the current needs of the community in 2019 or 2091.

More Donations In = More Grants Out

When you donate to a Field of Interest Fund, we can provide more grants to more programs in your community. Below is a list of some of the Field of Interest Funds from which we will provide grants during this Annual Grant Cycle. Sarah Copeland, Director of Grants and Programs at the Community Foundation, highlights some of the funds included in the 2019 Annual Grant Cycle. “Notice the amounts available to grant for each specific interest area. Your donation directly increases the amount we can give back to the community. Would you like to see more art programs available to youth or seniors? Give to the Fund for the Arts. Do you volunteer with a program that helps our local environment? Give to the Fund for the Environment – and apply for a grant!”
