Paul Wellstone said, “We all do better, when we all do better.” The Community Foundation agrees – with a twist. The Community Foundation talks about doing good. Sarah Copeland, Director of Grants and Programs at the Community Foundation often takes issue with grammar usage. Okay, she always has issues with grammar usage, but when it comes to doing good, she has no problems. “Doing good and doing well are two different things,” notes Copeland. “We would all do well to do good.”
Chris Fulton, Executive Director of the Community Foundation often asks, “What good do you want to do? There are all sorts of community members doing wonderful things to help people.” The Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation is the place that helps you do good.
Do-Gooders are Everywhere
So many community members do good things, large and small, that have a positive impact on the community. Some do good alone or with their kids; others gather friends to join in. Just last week, we wrote about the Soggy Bottoms Gals, having fun, and doing good to support local people dealing with the burden of a cancer diagnosis.
Tim Oakley, a cancer survivor, now holds The Memorial golf tournament every year to support the Fund that supported him. The tournament is Thursday, August 22 at Eagle Ridge. There is probably still time to join Tim and others at Eagle Ridge to do good. Call Tim at (218) 256-5075.
Bovey Rocks with #thekindnessrocksproject
Have you noticed the small painted rocks around Bovey? Mindy Tammi gathered a gaggle of kiddos together to do good. Isaac and Joey Tammi, Miranda and Rylee Thomsen, Lennon Greelis, Preston Troumbly, and Makenna Sobtzak are the kids that paint small rocks for people to distribute around town. “If you haven’t seen the rocks, get over to Bovey”, remarks Copeland. “Give yourself some time. Grab a pizza at Nana Chelle’s Cafe, and stop in to Annabelle’s Antique Mall, too. Be sure to find the painted rocks, and spread some good around Bovey.” The kids are making more rocks for Bovey Farmers’ Day on September 1st and 2nd. Mark your calendars to attend! Members of the Greenway Area Community Fund Advisory Committee will be at Farmers’ Day to talk about your ideas for doing good in the Greenway Area.
Supporting the your local Community Fund
The Community Foundation has five Area Community Funds that together, cover the entire Greater Itasca Area. Each Area Community Fund targets a specific community, and during 2019, your donation is doubled, though a special grant. Each Area Community Fund has a local committee that seeks to do good for the community. Whether you provide a gift that is doubled, want to work with the Fund Advisory Committee, or have great ideas for doing good, contact one of the Committee members. They are all listed on this website: click here
