Greenway Rocks with #thekindnessrocksproject

August 26, 2019

Have you noticed the small painted rocks around the Greenway Area?

I asked Mindy Tammi about how the Greenway Rocks came to be. “The rocks started because I was having a garage sale and my oldest son, Isaac, wanted to sell something. Well, he loves rocks, so he said was going to paint rocks to sell. I let it play out, and asked if he was going to keep the money or donate it. He wondered where it would be possible to donate to, so I gave him some options. When I said the Blandin Foundation is matching 100 percent of donations to the Greenway Area Community Fund, there was no hesitation. He wanted the money to benefit the Greenway Area.”

Isaac and Joey Tammi, Miranda and Rylee Thomsen, Lennon Greelis, Preston Troumbly, and Makenna Sobtzak started to paint rocks and they sold them at the garage sale. Mindy Tammi continued, “We have a very generous community, and with donations for Greenway Rocks, the kids made $500! With the $500 match from the Blandin Foundation grant to the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation, the kids provided $1000 back to the community they live in. It’s amazing! Greenway does a great job instilling Greenway Pride at a young age, and they all truly believe they are at the best school in the world! You know, I thought we would be painting 10 rocks - not 40; but the kids go find special rocks, paint them green, and put Greenway sayings on them”, I have to say a special thank you to those who have already purchased rocks!

Summer isn’t over! Scavenger Hunts and Community Celebrations

“If you haven’t seen the rocks, you haven’t been around the Greenway Area lately”, remarks Copeland. “This is the perfect time to go on a Greenway Area scavenger hunt!” The kids are making more rocks in preparation for Bovey Farmers’ Day. Mark your calendars to attend the celebration. It’s free and open to the public. “The Greenway Rocks have been displayed all over – in gardens, around offices and by front doors”, notes Tammi. The kids painted and set out all sorts of rocks. They will have Greenway Rocks for sale at Bovey Farmers’ Day. All the money raised from selling the rocks will again be donated to the Greenway Area Community Fund. Tammi continues, “The kids like to see their money matched and they know the money will stay in the Greenway community.”

Supporting your local Community Fund

The Community Foundation has five Area Community Funds that together, cover the entire Greater Itasca Area. Thanks to a generous matching grant from the Blandin Foundation, every donation in 2019 is matched 1:1.  Simply put, your donation is doubled!  Now is the time to take advantage of this special opportunity.  Each Area Community Fund has a local committee that seeks to do good for the community. Whether you provide a gift that is doubled, want to work with a Fund Advisory Committee, or have great ideas for doing good, contact one of the Committee members.  They are all listed on the Community Foundation website: https://www.gracf.org/community-funds. Members of the Greenway Area Community Fund Advisory Committee will be at Farmers’ Day to talk about your ideas for doing good in the Greenway Area.

Bovey Farmers’ Day

“Every year on Labor Day, the community of Bovey celebrates Bovey Farmers Day. The Farmers Day celebration was originally put together to honor and thank the local farmers around the area. Farmers would flock to Bovey with their products to be put on display for judging and prizes. The tradition continues today and this year will be the 108th year, the longest running event in the State of Minnesota. The celebration runs all weekend with a parade on Monday at 10:30.” (From the City of Bovey website)

August 30 – September 2 is the Bovey Farmers’ Day Celebration. “Saturday, August 31 at 9PM is a Street Dance in Bovey, but there are all types of activities, starting on Friday. Check out the Bovey Farmers’ Day Facebook page for more information”, notes Copeland.
