The Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation is celebrating the Community Giving to Community matching funds campaign for its third and final year, on #Giving Tuesday, December 3. The Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation provides matching funds for donations to Area Community Funds through a $1M grant from the Blandin Foundation. The Community Giving to Community campaign allocates the million-dollar match in equal amounts to create and build five Community Funds:

  • Deer River Area Community Fund

  • Greater Itasca Area Community Fund

  • Greenway Area Community Fund

  • Hill City Area Community Fund

  • Nashwauk Area Community Fund

“This is a major investment in the future of our communities,” says Chris Fulton, Grand Rapids Area Foundation Executive Director. “Our Community Fund Advisory Committees are working diligently to raise up to $200,000 that will be matched, dollar for dollar, creating the potential for $400,000 growth in their fund.”

Because of many wonderful community members like you, Area Community Funds have grown!  You can help your Area Community Fund reach their goal of making the million-dollar match during #GivingTuesday.

Community Funds provide a way for citizens and businesses to give to their local community. Each Fund has a local advisory committee that oversees grants for programs and activities throughout the community. Annual earnings derived from the invested endowment are granted to local non-profit and charitable needs that benefit local families.

#GivingTuesday, an international day of giving, is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, this year on December 3. This day kicks off the holiday giving season and inspires people to take collective action to improve their local communities and give back. “Think of it this way: You have Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday and #Giving Tuesday. After the intensity of the weekend, #GivingTuesday is the perfect way to get back to the mode of giving thanks,” says Sarah Copeland, Director of Grants and Programs at the Community Foundation.

Copeland continues, “Community Funds are endowments that give back to the local community every year – forever.

The Nashwauk Area Community Fund has given back over a quarter of a million dollars to projects and programs in the Nashwauk Area since it was started in 2000.

The Greater Itasca Area Fund has provided over $70,000 that directly benefits residents from Bigfork to Remer – throughout the Greater Itasca Area.

Hill City Area Community Fund has provided over $8,300, in the last couple of years alone, which support the health and welfare of families living in Hill City, Jacobson, Palisade, Spang and Swatara.

What do you want for your community? We call this Community Giving to Community, because that’s what it is! Your donation to your community comes back – for you, your children, grandchildren and generations to follow.”

“The collective pride of our communities and the level of energy and enthusiasm from all the volunteers is impressive. These Community Funds offer a direct way for citizens to give back to the communities they love and provide ‘active hope’ by empowering communities to take charge of their future,” says Fulton.
